The Crested Pigeon is well known for its thin black crest on its head that stands upright. Its wing consists of black stripes with metallic green to purple and brown feathers. It makes a bell like sound when flying.

The male of the species puts on a spectacular display when courting a female. It bobs up and down cooing at the female, with its tail spread out like a fan, similar to the courtship behaviour of the Peacock.

Crested Pigeons live in lightly wooded grassland areas with water nearby and they mainly feed on seeds. They are found throughout the Blue Mountains.
