The Rainbow Lorikeet is named because of its beautiful rainbow plumage. It has a bright red bill, blue head and a yellow-green collar. Its abdomen consists of a nice violet-blue and green upper body. The chest consists of a yellow and red blend of feathers.

Like most parrots, the Rainbow Lorikeets are noisy birds and often can be heard in large numbers screeching continuously on trees where they feed on fruit, seeds and nectar. The tip of their tongues consist of a brush that assists them in extracting nectar from flowers.

These parrots nests in tree hollows and can be heard from great distances throughout the Blue Mountains. They are very sociable and will gather in large numbers on a few selected trees to feed during the evenings. Sometimes, the squabbling will continue to late at night.
